Guidance on School Dances and Other School-Sponsored After-School Activities
In accordance with Chancellor's Regulation A-830 and the DOE’s commitment to access and inclusion, schools interested in sponsoring afterschool events for students and their family members must ensure that such events are gender-neutral, and open to all students and person(s) in a parental or familial relationship with the student. Such afterschool events for students and their families are integral to providing welcoming and supportive school communities. Schools are reminded that gender-specific events, such as father-daughter dances or mother-son dances, can exclude certain students and types of families, and may also be inconsistent with laws that prohibit exclusion on the basis of sex or gender, and are therefore not permissible.
For additional guidance on this topic, please consult with your Senior Field Counsel (SFC).
