After-School Club Procedures

REMINDER:  If you have not done so, the following must be done if you have an after school program:  
 
Below is the form that must be used to take your after school attendance.  The names must be typed on the form and your name must be typed on the top with the name of your club.  The typed form must be e-mailed to me for my permanent file.
 
Each time you meet your after school students you must take attendance by making checks next to their name on the appropriate day.  Put the date on the top and sign at the bottom.  You must send a student with the completed formwithin 10 minutes into your program to the main office 532.  A copy and given to the student so you can attach it to your attendance sheet.
 
When everyone has followed this procedure, we will be able to order snacks for our kids.

Attendance Correction Procedures

1)   If a student comes into the main office claiming he/she was marked absent, the student must be given the attendance correction form to give to their teacher.  The teacher is to fill out the form below and return it back to the office signed by the teacher.
 
2)   If office staff/guidance counselor or administrator realizes that a student was marked absent, the same procedure as above must be followed.
 
3)   If a teacher realizes that he/she made a mistake on the attendance bubble sheet and the sheet has already been scanned, the teacher must fill out the above form, sign it and return it to the main office staff.
 
4)   At no time must any attendance be changed without the form below.
 
5)   Attendance only should be changed by Gladys, Kecia or Valerie.  No one else should be changing any students attendance and that can ONLY be done with the appropriate sign documentation from a teacher, guidance counselor or administrator.

Fire Drill Procedures

Evacuations are the most common used emergency response in New York City Schools.  It is important that we practice each one as if was the real thing. 
 
Please remember the following protocols:
 
1.  Teachers must lead their classes until they reach their designated stopping point. Students should not be leading the way.
2.  Students should exit quickly and orderly, remaining in a two line formation whenever possible.
3.  Take attendance-Account for the students who actually reported to your class.
4.  Students should be silent at all times and should be reminded to remain quiet when they talk.
5.  Tapco's designated sidewalk is the one directly opposite the stairs from the 4th floor plaza.  Any class exiting or  entering the building from the main entrance should cross immediately at the bottom of the staircase. 
6.  The fire drill is not over until students have returned to the classroom.
 
Practice makes perfect and we have 4 more fire drills to go for the month of November.  Lets aim for perfection.

"Protocol for student leaving room unauthorized" 
From the 2013-14 Faculty Handbook

Per the 2013-14 TAPCo Faculty Handbook, the following must be adhered to under all circumstances.
 
“Protocol for student leaving room unauthorized
If a student is to walk out of the classroom at any given time without permission or without a pass, this calls for an automatic phone call home from the teacher. Make sure the class and the lesson continues, but you can open your door and stand by it to see where the student went. Note down the students information and time that the student left.  Student will serve an Art detention for his or her actions.
 
Teachers should
1) Manage the classroom. The classroom is your number one priority and make sure the student’s continue doing their work. 
2) If you can get the student back in the class without causing a scene, explain to the student how walking out the class is unacceptable.  If the student is out of your reach, notify an assistant dean or the head dean about what just happened.
3). Note down students information and time student left.
 4). The classroom is your number one priority. Please manage it.”

Common Core Curriculum Professional Development Updates

The NYCDOE is offering the following professional development (PD) and resources on Common Core-aligned curriculum and instruction:

Registration Links for Session 3: The first and second sessions for each PD series listed below have already taken place. This overview provides the year-long schedule for each PD series and registration links for the third session of the series, which will take place this winter.

§  Register by November 20 for curriculum team sessions for ReadyGen, Go Math!, Code X, and CMP3.

§  Register by November 20 for curriculum team sessions for high schools and middle schools that did not purchase Core Curriculum materials. These sessions will focus on shifting pedagogy in the core content areas.

§  Register by December 20 for general sessions for ReadyGen, Go Math!, Code X, and CMP3.

Additional Guidance and FAQs on Implementation: As noted in the October 29 edition of Principals’ Weekly, additional guidance and answers to FAQs on implementing ReadyGen, Go Math!, Code X, and CMP3have been posted on the Common Core Library. Note that the information in the guidance was shared with reviewers conducting Quality Reviews and Principal Practice Observations before Quality Reviews began. You are encouraged to share this guidance with teachers.

Core Knowledge for Pre-k: As noted in the October 29 edition of Principals’ Weekly, pre-k teachers may register by November 27 for a two-day Core Knowledge professional development session from December 10-11.

New Online Resources: The following online resources are available to schools that opted into the Core Curriculum programs below:

§  Code X: You are invited to participate in the second Code X webinar, “Engaging Students in Academic Discourse.” The first half of the webinar will focus on building vocabulary and strategies for scaffolding evidence-based conversations, including facilitating Socratic Seminars. Participants will then discuss strategies for facilitating the “Collaborate and Present” task and for creating a supportive learning environment for rich conversations in their classrooms. All webinars will take place from 4:00–6:00 p.m; register here: November 12, November 21, and November 25. Note that the third Code X webinar will take place on March 6, 10, and 13, and the fourth Code X webinar will take place on May 13, 15, and 20. All webinars will take place from 4:00–6:00 p.m.

§  Go Math!: Register here for the third Go Math! webinar, “Keeping the Pace,” which will be held from 4:00–5:00 p.m. on November 20. In this webinar, participants will explore the NYC Go Math! yearly plan and discuss making instructional decisions to improve lesson pacing.

§  Core Knowledge: An unedited, recorded version of the November 4 Core Knowledge office hours is available here. These office hours covered the three pillar model of instruction (Guided Reading and Accountable Independent Reading (GRAIR), Listening and Learning, and Skills) and focused on GRAIR in more depth. Supporting resources mentioned during the call are available here: Appendix on GRAIR, White Paper on "Both And” Instruction, White Paper on Merging the Common Core Standards with Core Knowledge.
